We will have a picnic at the picnic area by the Lake Ouachita State Park Visitor Center at 6:00 PM. This is a bring your own picnic. Bear Starr will bake a Spice Cake for all to enjoy as a desert as well. At 7:15 PM the Bird Island Boat Trip leaves from the Lake Ouachita State Park Marina, just down the hill from the picnic area.
The Bird Island Boat Trip is truly a wonder and spectacle of nature. Purple Martins, the largest swallow in North America are into their annual migration from their nesting grounds in North America to their wintering grounds in South America. As part of the migration, they gather in "roosts" along their route to rest and do a bit of feeding before heading on to their next stop. Bird Island is one of those roosts. Every night from mid/late July to mid August tens of thousands of Purple Martins head to Bird Island to rest for the night. Studies of Bird Island have documented as many as 50,000 Purple Martins spending the night on Bird Island. Watching the sun set, seeing other birds such as Herons and Egrets head into their roosts, watching 20,000 to 50,000 Purple Martins fly in, swirl in descending circles all the while talking to each other and sometimes swooping within feet of the boat is a spectacle of nature worth seeing time and again.
